August 2010
Chula Vista Elks Campout

Run a Ways August 2010

Fifteen Run-A-Way RVs traveled South to the Chula Vista Elks Lodge Campground in August. The weekend campout was sunny with cool breezes off the ocean keeping everyone quite comfortable. Many arrived a day early and treated themselves to a Thursday night fish-fry at the Chula Vista Marina, just a few miles away. We won’t discuss the one carload that got hopelessly lost, driven by someone who shall remain nameless…will we Dave? Friday night the group showed their support for the Elks Major Project by enjoying an Italian spaghetti dinner in the Lodge. The guest speaker was the grateful mother of a young man the Elks have been successfully treating for nineteen years. As is always the case, the campers were generous with their contributions to the Lodge’s fund raiser for the kids. Wagon master Pat Martino conducted the Sat morning meeting and discussed plans for the upcoming Elks Rally. He encouraged all to attend and to turn in their reservation forms to him. Pat complimented the group for their commitment to raising funds for charity and having fun while doing it. He said the club was still growing with the addition of two new members.
In addition to having full hook-ups and wonderful amenities, the Lodge campground has a picnic park with two official size Bocce Ball courts. Trailboss Dave Cooper held a Bocce tournament and the team of Marian Zannella & Harts Hobbs took home the trophies. The Sat. night pot luck dinner under the stars was, as usual, deliciously decadent, and topped off with the mean-hearted sheriff’s Marge Schreck and Andy Costello picking on even their closest friends. As they say, “All is fair in love and camping” The coveted “Space Cadet” award went to Marge & Tom Schreck for turning their RV into a lake when neither one of them left a water faucet running. Must have been one of the dogs! The night ended sitting around a campfire, telling stories and enjoying the company of the campground hosts. Thanks to Trailbosses Dave and Kathy Cooper & assistants Lenny and Sue Hersh for a fun filled and enjoyable weekend. Remember, if you have not trailbossed a campout over the last couple of years…you’re due!
Sept. Campout is at La Pacifica RV Resort in Chula Vista with Kathy and Nick Nichols as Trailbosses

Andy

July Campout 2010

This month's campground was  only 44.36 miles from our lodge and is a quite escape from urban living. The Guajome  Regional Park is locate on Route 76, just seven miles East of Route 5.

Thursday there was an early arrival of 5 rigs and some occupants headed for the local casinos, fourteen (14) more rigs arrived Friday for a total of (19)

Friday Night Cocktail and  appetizers were served in the clubhouse but by the size and quantity it was more like another pot luck dinner.  Some people stayed around to play the quarter game which was won by Jennae Wessling and Georgina Pickering

Saturday morning meeting chaired by Wagonmaster Pat Martino who just returned from Elks Convention in Orlando.

Guests introduced included Paul Popadak, Joe & Doann Girtin, Sue Backus, Glen & George Pickford
An auction of donated items was held Saturday afternoon and it raised $335.25 for the Run-a-ways general fund.

The Lapirres' hosted a high school photo identification contest that was won by Sandy McClure who identified 16 out of 23 photos.

The traditional potluck dinner was held in the clubhouse Saturday night. There were two cash drawings. Bob Lepley won $30.00 and Donna Wild won $50.00

Sheriffs for the evening were Bob & Linda Hauxhurst who raised charity money by imposing .25 cent fines for perceived infractions of members.

The Space Cadet Award was won by Jim Wessling for failure to recognize his own trash can.

Trail bosses Lepleys' and their assistants, Lapierres' did a great job planing the campout and organizing activities to keep people entertained.

August campout will be hosted by the Coopers and assisted by Len & Sue Hersh at the Chula Vista Elks. The September campout  will be at the La Pacifica RV Resort and hosted by Nick Nichols
The Elks Rally will be held in Hemet September 24, 25, and 26. This year the games will be conducted indoors to avoid the heat we experienced last year. Plans are underway for the Annual Western Night held by the Run-a ways, and this year it will be held in August.

The June campout was held at the beautiful Chula Vista Marina in San Diego County. 24 RV’s filled with members & guests enjoyed sunny skies and just a
slightly cool breeze coming off the water. First-time Trailbosses Fred and JoAnn Emmerich were ably assisted by Bob and Linda Hauxhurst .
Friday evening the group gathered for cocktails and “Heavy hors d’oeuvres” (as JoAnn described them). And as usual, they were delicious and plentiful. At the
Saturday 10:00AM meeting, Wagonmaster Pat Martino presented Gene Yamauchi with a monogrammed jacket as a token of
the Club’s appreciation of her years of service as Club Treasurer. A vote was taken to attend the Elks Rally in September. Pat also reminded the group
of their obligation to host one Campout at least every 3 years.

A departure from the usual Saturday night Pot Luck dinner was decided on in favor of an afternoon cocktail party. This time with
“Light hors d’oeuvres.” This was done to allow the campers to attend the fun Street Dance party put on by the Park. There’s
no shortage of parties with this group and they’re some pretty good dancers too!

Susan and Shelly Zeiler did a duel Sheriff’s routine and did a good job of building up our Purple Pig Fund. The 50/50’s were won
by Roger Probst and Babe Giuliano and Frank Gunning won the Space Cadet for his whining about not getting his lunch on
time, Jeeze Frank!

MAY CAMPOUT 2010
(Submitted by Leo Hazell)
The May campout comprised 20 rigs and was held at Campland on The Bay, in San Diego. The trail bosses for the event were
Howard & Deb Dyson and assisted by Shari & Dave Roadway.  Although our sites were only 100 yards from the beach the
weather was overcast, cool which did not encourge swimming.

Some of the campers arrived Thursday a day early.  The campground has a myriad  amenities geared for family entertainment.

A cocktail party  with Hors devours was held Friday night in between the rigs of our hosts the Dysons and Roadways.

The Saturday morning meeting was conducted  by Nick Nichols who was filling in for Pat Martino, Wagonmaster. The traditional
Saturday night the pot luck dinner was conducted  in a large open air tent provided by Campland. Dinner was followed with a
large assortment of desserts that filled a large table. Pat & Barbara Martino were guests for the dinner and briefed the gathering on Convention events.

There was a double drawing for cash winners. Forty five dollars was won by Jim Lapiere which he donated to the Purple Pig Fund.
Thirty five dollars was won by Babe Giuliano.
The Space Cadet award was passed on to John Morrow who demonstrated a lack of  safety awareness in the towing of  his VW without the two required safety pins.

Sheriffs, Marge Schreck and Frank Gunning raised a few dollars for charity with a fun filled perception of Run-a-ways wrong doings.

Sunday morning most of the campers returned home wile the Roadways remained for one more California day before heading to Colorado

Everyone at the campout had a great time and hats off to the trail bosses and their assistants for a well organized program that all enjoyed, i
ncluding a boat ride in the bay. The gathering made cash donations to support the new Elk statue at the lodge.

Run-A-Ways’ Report
April Campout 2010

Newport Dunes RV Waterfront Resort welcomed a wonderful turnout of 37 Run-AWays
rigs for its April Camp Out. Trail Bosses Joe and Babe and assistants Shelly
and Sue planned a unique and tasty Friday night cocktail party. On Friday afternoon,
Babe played Rachel Ray, and taught the gals how to make her zesty Italian sausage bread.
These were then served along with hors d'oeuvres, sangria, and a keg! Games and a
very competitive Poker Tournament completed the fun. Wagonmaster and new ER
Pat presided over the Saturday morning club meeting with decision regarding our attendance
at this year’s Rally still pending. Many thanks to guests Richard and Stella
Oliva, who donated $100 to the Purple Pig and to new member Jeanne Frankenreiter,
who displayed her poker talents the night before and her generosity by donating $50.
Lovely Babe, the birthday girl, celebrated with her family and Run-A-Ways friends,
by serving deliciously rare steaks, plump and juicy sausages, and tender pork roast
to approximately 100 campers and guests on Saturday night. The only complaint was
that by the time you reached her goodies, your plate was filled with the succulent
shrimp, amazing vegetable dishes, salads of all kinds, and tempting breads! Yes, devilish
desserts too! Somehow the female sheriff got lost but Shelly nailed all of Babe's
family but good and male sheriff Frank kept everyone in stitches as he lightened their
wallets with fines. Lucky Nick Nichols won the $100 drawing and showed where his
heart is by promptly donating half his winnings back to the Purple Pig for the kids.
My goodness, these Run-A-Ways are generous and fun loving group!
May campout is Campland on the Bay with the Dysons as Trailbosses.

Run-A-Ways’ Report MARCH 2010 CAMPOUT

Sixty-one Campers descended into the Desert Hot
Springs area for a weekend of camping, golf,
sunshine and (Gulp!) wind. The early Thursday
arrivals enjoyed a bonus of 2 beautiful days before
the gale force winds arrived early Saturday
morning. Trail Bosses Janice and Martin Carbone,
hosting their first campout along with assistants
Kathy & Nick Nichols and Marge and Tom Schreck,
did a marvelous job of managing the festivities in
spite of Saturday’s winds. A calm sunny Friday
morning brought out 24 campers for the golf
tournament on the resort’s beautifully manicured
course. Trophies, courtesy of Dave & Kathy
Cooper, went to the first place team of Dotty
Morrow, Tom Schreck, Fred Emmerich and Dave
Cooper Jr. Even the last place team, who shall
remain nameless, received a trophy. The spacious
& comfortable club house did double duty as our
party place and our refuge during the wind storm.
Of course the campers, undaunted by the high
winds, just enjoyed their card playing and games
all the more as they watched their lawn chairs sail
by in the wind. Saturday night’s pot luck was a
smashing success with the room nicely decorated
in a St. Pat’s Day theme. The 50/50 was won by
Lenny Hersh and Sandi McClure. First-time
Sheriff Pam West did a great job of assessing fines
on just about every one of the 61 attendees. Male
Sheriff Shelly Zeller kept the group in stitches with
his humorous accounts of their weekend
indiscretions. Shelly should have been a stand-up
comedian. The infamous “Space Cadet” award
was given to John Ahlstrom for pulling into the
campground with one of his RV’s wheels about to
fall off. A very relieved John said he was happy
(and lucky) to be there to receive the award. Big
thanks go out to Jan & Martin and team for a great
weekend of fun and fellowship. The April Campout
will be at Newport Dunes hosted by Babe & Joe
Giuliano

February 2010 Campout Tucalota Springs, Sage, CA
.

Beautiful snow capped mountains, cold  nights and warm days, peacocks, turkeys,
yellow breasted finches, and a fishing pond were just a few of the amenities enjoyed
by the Run-A-Ways at their February camp out in the rolling hills of Tucalota Springs
Campground. Some of Thursdays early arrivals found a casino for fun while others
just enjoyed dinner at the campground. Fred and JoAnn Emmerich hosted a marvelous
"New Rig" party, complete with a champagne toast! Acting Wagonmaster
Andy Costello engineered the Saturday morning business meeting where nominations
for new officers were made. Andy also coerced several commitments for 2011 trail
bosses. Saturday night dinner featured a wonderful assortment of delicious entrees,
salads, and desserts, including bithday cake for Nick Nichols, who also won the 50/50
drawing and promptly donated half back to the "kids" Major Project charity. Sheriffs
Rosemary Lionetti and Dave Cooper then extracted a goodly number of quarters
from those naughty campers who deserved it. Thanks to Trailbosses Elizabeth
and Leo Hazell and their able assistants, Carol and Jim Lapierre for planning such
a fun campout. Janice and Martin Carbone are Trailbosses for the March 13-14
campout at Sands RV Resort. Hurry and sign up! It promises to be a good one!

JANUARY 2010 CAMPOUT
(Submitted by Andy Costello)

Our January campout was held at the beautiful
Golden Village Palms RV Resort in Hemet.
Judy & Barry Buckser were the trail bosses with
Linda & Bob Hauxhurst as assistants. The
weather was warm and sunny and the weekend
a huge success. At the Saturday meeting,
Wagonmaster Pat Martino announced the club
membership was up to 67 couples. All the
campouts for 2010 were assigned and
trailbosses for 2011 were needed. Pat reminded
everyone that if you have not signed on to serve
as Trailboss in the past three years, you are
expected to do so in 2011. Pat also said that the
$1000 donation to the two military families for
Christmas brought the club’s charitable
donations for last year to an all time high.
Saturday afternoon’s events included swimming
and also a tournament on the Resort’s
professional quality shuffleboard courts which
were great fun but a real challenge to the novice
Elks’ players whose errant shots sometimes sent
propelled disks into the next county. The
tournament was won by the team of Kathy
Carmer, Dave Cooper Jr. and Bob Hauxhurst.
The Saturday pot luck was a big success as
usual, and sheriffs Judy Lepley and Andy
Costello managed to fine all for their weekend
indiscretions. The Space Cadet award was
presented to Jim Lapierre for making an extra 5
hour round trip from the campground to pick
up wife Carol. Now that’s true love! The laugher
of the weekend came Saturday night when Len
Hersh, walking home from the clubhouse after
a late night card game, made a right turn in the
dark and walked right into the pool, clothes,
shoes & all. Companions Ken Zittrer and Bob
Hauxhurst were still laughing when they
delivered the sloshing Len to his RV. Camping
with the Run-A-Ways is such a blast! The
February Campout will be held at Tucalota
Springs RV Park, Trailbosses Leo & Elizabeth
Hazell assisted by Jim & Carol Lapierre.

to take over the vacant Secretary position.

Pat finalized a horde of plans for Western Night. Campers were reminded
to sign up for the Elks Rally Sept. 24-26. Please let Pat know when

awarded the Space Cadet outhouse and was advised to sign up for a "How To
Back Up A 5th Wheeler" senior citizen class. Trail Bosses Mark and

marvelous camp out and not only fulfilled trail boss duties, but did a fantastic
job as Sheriffs, too! As usual, our campers (especially Ruth and Jean)
donated to the Casino business, but Marge got even by winning a couple
of jackpots. Our September campout will be at La Pacifica RV with Nick

Run-a-ways:  Class of September 2008

Run-A-Ways Report for January 2008
(Submitted by Al Sabsevitz)

The New Year kicked off with a great campout for the Run-A-Ways.  Sixty two RV'ers enjoyed the 70-plus degree weather at Emerald Desert Resort in Palm Desert.  Gene & Harry Yamauchi were trail bosses with Pam and Forrest West as assistants.  Over half the group attended the Friday night performance of the world famous Palm Springs Follies.

Wagonmaster Pat Martino conducted Saturday's business meeting.  Annual dues of $15 is now due for the 2008 season.  Send your check to Gene Yamauchi.  You must be a member in good standing to vote in the upcoming club elections.  Officer nominations will be held in February with email balloting in March.  The positions of wagonmaster, assistant wagonmaster, secretary, treasurer, publicity chair and all the alternates are up for election.  The new officers will assume their office on April 1.

Saturday's night pot luck dinner was held in the Emerald Desert party room.  There was plenty of good food and tasty desserts.  Both 50/50 drawings were won by Babe Giuliano.  (She buys lots of tickets.)  The sheriffs were Lenny Hersh and Shari Roadway.  The Space Cadet Award was given to Roger Probst for his “Quad 9” hand.

Upcoming campouts:  Feb. 8-10:  Sands RV Resort, Desert Hot Springs.  Babe & Joe Giuliano are trail bosses.  March 7-9: Tucalotta Springs.  Jerry & Laura Hoff are trail bosses.  April 11-13: Oak Creek.  Rob Lionetti is the trail boss.
